Immersion courses for primary school teachers in France

Over the years, teachers from all over Europe have attended our courses in France to develop their discursive skills, update their methodology and exchange ideas for good practice in the classroom. These courses, which take place in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, are also aimed at boosting the participants’ confidence in teaching French as a foreign language.

All participants receive support from the European Union COMENIUS Lifelong Learning Programme available through the British Council (UK) or Léargas (Republic of Ireland). The grant fully covers the course fee, subsistence and accommodation, and should cover all travel expenses.

About the courses

The venue in Lyon, a UNESCO World Heritage City, is Jean Moulin University. Individual accommodation is provided in the city centre. In Dordogne, the classes take place in the Centre International de Séjour of Salignac, near Sarlat-la-Canédat, with individual accommodation in the local pavillons.

Different levels will be catered for as the class will often be broken into small groups. The methodology sessions are delivered in both French and English and focus on techniques which will enable teachers to involve all pupils in learning through the medium of French. Participants will be encouraged to speak French as much as possible in social situations and on the cultural excursions.

Aims

· To improve methodological expertise in the teaching of French to young
   learners
· To provide participants with materials and ideas suitable for the teaching
   of French at primary level
· To develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France
· To improve participants’ competence and performance in French
· To use Internet and other ICT resources in your class

Preparation

These courses are not suitable for beginners so a prior knowledge of French, even basisc, is essential. Teachers will be expected to share examples of good practice, including classroom activities/games, website addresses and/or useful resources. Those can be prepared in advanced and brought to the course.

Follow-up

A certificate is awarded at the end of the course. Teachers will also have the opportunity to join a network of all participants and exchange ideas and good practice.
